T1D and Sports: Riding the Ups and Downs of Blood Glucose

By stephanie 26 May, 2022

I had the opportunity to present this topic to a group of people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) called the T1D Huddle. The link includes recordings of the video presentation, as well as audio access through Spotify and Apple Podcasts. The T1D Huddle meets monthly and discusses many different topics relating to those living

The Boston Half Marathon

By stephanie 9 Oct, 2017

First things first, I want to clear up some common misconceptions about the Boston half marathon. The half marathon course is NOT a shorter version of the full marathon course. Yes, they are both organized by the Boston Athletic Association, but that is where their similarities end. The half marathon does not require one to

5 Peaks Race 2 – Golden Ears – May 06, 2017

By stephanie 7 Jul, 2017

Feeling unimpressed with the technicality of the MEC trail races, I was on the hunt for something a little more challenging. I had heard about the 5 Peaks Trail racing series from a coworker last year, and he had nothing but good things to say about it. I consulted my race spreadsheet to see if

Running: It’s all in the hips (Part 2)

By stephanie 8 Jun, 2017

In the previous post (Part 1), I talked about the contribution of the position of our pelvis on our ability to run properly. Muscles cannot fire properly if we are in an anterior or posterior pelvic tilt. While this is a significant contribution, a lot of runners have more often felt afflicted from the sideways

Running: It’s all in the hips (Part 1)

By stephanie 23 Mar, 2017

Part 1 of this topic will address the forward and backward contributors to running. Part 2 of this topic will address side-to-side (otherwise known as lateral and medial) contributors to running. What does the pelvis do? It supports the weight of the entire upper body, as well as contribute to locomotion and posture. It would

Thanks to @alanlamphotography for the during #race Thanks to @alanlamphotography for the during #race shots from Slay the Dragon!
Thanks to my company for getting the finish line photos!

The race results were only reported as overall finishers and overall for gender. I didn't like that the "did not start" racers were added to that total. I didn't finish 26/44, I finished 26/35.
BUT
That means I finished in the average of the back of the pack!! Which is WAY better than I thought I would do! And it's what I was hoping I would get myself up to. Though I didn't think about this one bit during this race. That was a thought from a previous race.

It also means I have to shave off a good 45 minutes if I want to finish in the top 10 females, for next year. Which is quite a big jump!
I think it's a more reasonable goal to aim for the middle. As aiming (or hoping) to land in the average of the back of pack got me exactly that. Which also shows that my mind might be the bigger limit than my performance or my #fitness.

Today was #RaceDay !! Did the @bush_babe_ 's 13K S Today was #RaceDay !! Did the @bush_babe_ 's 13K Slay the Dragon race at #SilverStar #mountain, and it was SO AWESOME!!

When I saw the course profile a few days ago, I was not looking forward to the elevation gain. However, it was very gradual and along twists and turns and little ups and downs along the way!!

This course had EVERYTHING.
We started on pavement, which was a little rough but it was all flat! Then, we got onto some gorgeous dirt single track, then SNOW, then more dirt, mud, gravel, dirt, rocks, more snow, and a rocky descent. I LOVED hitting technical terrain!!

The conditions were perfect, it was opening day for the downhill mountain biking park (we saw some bikers), not too hot or cold, well placed aid stations and course flagging. There were course sweepers, and free massage at the end of race (I did not partake). Cute little wooden medals, too!

Best of all, I felt GREAT! I didn't have any blood sugar problems, though I ate a little more sugar than I wanted to, my right leg was a little sore at the beginning but resolved itself once I was running along undulating terrain. I also tried to focus on picking up my foot more.

Oh, and a gent in front of me at the beginning of race had his Omnipod on his arm, and I got a little ahead of him, and said "hey we're in the same club!" as I lifted my shirt in the back to show him my pod. We had a little chat and then I continued on my way. He was stoked to find another #t1d in the #okanagan who was #athletic!

I can't wait to do this race again next year!!

Did the "reverse Enduro loop" again at #KalPark. I Did the "reverse Enduro loop" again at #KalPark. I wanted something easy to follow (after getting lost at Ellison last Saturday) and I only wanted to do 5K, because today was my last day #running before @bush_babe_ 's 13K Slay the Dragon #TrailRunning race this Saturday at @silverstarmtnresort .

It was a pretty good #run! My right leg felt a little sore, but it felt like I just need to do some yoga tonight and tomorrow as pre-race prep. My #BloodSugars were decent which was a relief as the last couple times I ran this route midday or late afternoon, my blood sugars were very problematic.

One of my favourite things about using @strava is seeing previous attempts of the same loop. While today's wasn't my fastest, looking back at how much faster I was and how much harder my relative effort was, it's clear that I'm getting #fitter. Even just comparing that run from May 14th, same route, and much higher relative effort to today, where I was only a tiny bit faster but not working as hard. This is the motivation I needed, when #running always feels hard!

I know I'm getting my #trail running addiction back when I'm excited to look at my spreadsheet of upcoming races to register for over the summer and fall. I will do whatever it takes to make cross country skiing better for me this upcoming season!!
