The Boston Half Marathon

By stephanie 9 Oct, 2017

First things first, I want to clear up some common misconceptions about the Boston half marathon. The half marathon course is NOT a shorter version of the full marathon course. Yes, they are both organized by the Boston Athletic Association, but that is where their similarities end. The half marathon does not require one to

DIY Race Medal & Bib Rack

By stephanie 30 Jun, 2017

One of the fun souvenirs that one receives upon completing a race is getting a medal, or being given a race bib. A lot of the obstacle course races give out medals and headbands, and a lot of the road and trail running races give out race bibs. Some road/trail races do give out medals

MEC Race 3 – Pacific Spirit Park 5K – Mar 19, 2017

By stephanie 19 Mar, 2017

I was pretty excited about this race. I had yet to run this course. Despite running a lot of the trails at UBC, I had not yet been to this side. Since starting my 10K running plan, I have gotten faster. I know this because I have started using Strava, and my training plan is

MEC Race 1 Stanley Park 5K – Jan 29, 2017

By stephanie 14 Mar, 2017

First race of the year, and I convinced a friend to do it with me. They wanted to train for the BMO half marathon in May, and hadn’t been running in a long time. I said “How about you do this 5K with me?” So they did! The weather this time was much better than

2017 Race Schedule

By stephanie 6 Jan, 2017

I have most of my races already chosen and signed up for, because I wanted to keep with my 1 race per month frequency (which I started in August 2016 by accident). I wanted to select my races well in advance because a) I love being hyper-organized and b) I needed to know that races

2016 Year in Review

By stephanie 23 Dec, 2016

A lot of my loved ones, workmates, people I meet along the way, have asked me “How did you get into obstacle course racing?” or subsequently “How can I get into obstacle course racing?” to which, the answers are quite similar. I first learned about obstacle course racing about 5 years ago. The first one

MEC Race 8 2016 – Garry Point Park 5K

By stephanie 10 Dec, 2016

It was such a gorgeous day. A little cold and crisp but clear and bright and sunny. Oh, and windy. Very very windy. Here is a video of me talking about the wind before the race: I had managed to rope one of my coworkers into joining me, as he had been expressing frustration that

MEC Race 7 2016 – Stanley Park 5K

By stephanie 7 Nov, 2016

I wanted to make sure I kept up my monthly races, as I have been keeping up with my training always having a goal in mind. This race was only $10 (normally $15) because I got a discount from doing Rugged Maniac. I look forward to doing more of the MEC races because of the

The past few days of #Spring in #VernonBC have bee The past few days of #Spring in #VernonBC have been random bits of sun, cloud, and rain.

The first photo is from my #TrailRun from #KalamalkaPark along the access #trail that runs parallel to the road back to the Cosen's Bay parking lot. My friend and I did the "Enduro" loop in the correct direction, but I think I like it in the backwards direction better! The hills seem shorter in the backwards direction.
I love all the daffodils!!

The next few photos were from #running with my friend this morning, we did 3 loops of the #GreyCanalTrail in the BX. We went twice in the regular direction, and finished in the backwards direction to have a nice descent at the end. It was sunny where we were, but looking over toward Vernon showed clouds ahead!

The last photo is a selfie from my #GymWorkout yesterday. I'm happy with my #deadlift progress, trying to get back up to what I was lifting prior to my little tumble cross country skiing a month ago.

Hoping for no rain tomorrow so that I can go on a bike ride.

Still need to get a membership to the Vernon Paddling club, so that I can fit in going #StandUpPaddleboarding once a week!

#VernonBC looks like an emerald in the Spring! Eve #VernonBC looks like an emerald in the Spring! Everywhere I look is green!

Stepped outside for a brief #HillTraining session.
Walk/run to the hill (600m)
3x hill repeats of walking, running, sprinting (the hill was 100m)
Run back to the start

I don't really enjoy hill training/speed work, but I really need to get faster, to raise my lactate threshold, and decrease my exercising heart rate when cross country ski season returns.
Today's #training felt pretty great, though!

Though of course, some random dude tried to give me unsolicited hill training advice, and midway through his mansplaining, I told them "hey, I teach #exercise for a living, I know what I'm doing". That sent him on his merry way.

What a wonderful weekend! Saturday was a "chill What a wonderful weekend!

Saturday was a "chill day" of #training for me. Did a 17 km #bike ride along the #KalamalkaLake #RailTrail . It was chill because I was riding at a heart rate less than Zone 1, just keeping my body moving and enjoying the scenery from Coldstream to Kekuli Bay and back.

Sunday was trail #race day! I did the @dirtyfeetraces 8K at #KalamalkaPark and it was SO awesome!
I hadn't slept much the night before, though I slept well for the time that I was asleep.
The weather and trail conditions were perfect!
The trail markings were clear, the start/finish line was fun and upbeat, my body and mood were 100% on point, no gut problems, and my #BloodSugars maintained with little Gatorade, and no highs or lows.

I stuck with my plan, which was to walk all the ups, and run all the flats and downs. It felt amazing! I never felt too tired or impatient. Best of all, there was no commentary in my head. I thought about random things, like how I need to upgrade my sunglasses, but nothing relating to my body or my ability. Other than that, I want to be #fit enough to #run the whole thing next year. I don't need to build stamina, I need to build speed, so that I can cross country ski in a Zone 1 rather than a Zone 4 #HeartRate. I finished 4.5 minutes faster than my anticipated time, and despite working hard during the race, it didn't feel like I was over-reaching.

I took a little tumble on a flat dirt #trail. I didn't trip over anything, just my own feet. I landed straight ahead of me on my stomach with my arms stretched out in front of me. I was only mildly hurt, and kept on #running.

My favourite part about this race was that I had run most of the #trails before. It's so psychologically reassuring when you know how far away the finish line is, how long the hills are, etc. The next Dirty Feet trail race is in Kelowna in a month, and I need to get there beforehand to run some of the route, so that I can keep having these amazing race experiences!
