No Added Sugar January

By stephanie 5 Apr, 2018

A lot of people gave themselves the task of “Sober January”. For me, it was all about sugar. I had consumed far too much in December but more importantly, I recognized that my habit needed to be broken, so I needed to be totalitarian about it. What habit needed to be broken? Well, I would

So you decided to go on a diet…

By stephanie 2 Feb, 2017

Diets don’t work. I realize that being overweight or obese sucks. I truly truly get it. I’ve lived it.  Please remember that all popular diets are exactly that. A diet’s safety is not related to its effectiveness. If you take a shortcut, expect it to come back to you later in life. Unless, that shortcut

My #TrailRuns of the week. Tuesday (first photo) My #TrailRuns of the week.
Tuesday (first photo) of the wildflowers along the #Okanagan connector #trail between Okanagan Ave and 34th St. Hills are actually starting to feel easier. I must be getting better at glute activation because I had zero lower back pain!!

Thursday (second photo) ran at #GreyCanalTrail , starting at Turtle Mountain and headed out toward Blue Jay road, but didn't go the whole way. I turned around so that my #run was a little over 5K. It was such a hot and muggy day. It made me realize that #SummerIsHere and I need to start #running in the morning to beat the heat!!

Yesterday, I ran at #EllisonProvincialPark. I woke up at 6am to run at 7am, but by the time I assembled my things, did my morning routine and got started, it wasn't until 8am. The morning was perfect and the lush green kept me at a nice temperature. My #BloodSugars were great, and my right hip was fine. I'm spending a little more time doing my pre-run dynamic stretching which definitely makes a difference!
I also did my standard loop in reverse and it actually felt great!

Looking at my #training over the past 3 months, I feel overall like I'm making progress but I'm still far from where I want to be. It's hard for me not to feel disappointed because I know it's all on me. I had wanted to #exercise 6 days a week, as I was during my cross country ski and biathlon season, but it's been closer to 4 days.
I have 5 #workouts scheduled this coming week, then I'm taking the following week off to celebrate my 40th birthday.
Then, I wrote in 6 workouts the week after, all happening at 7am. 3 days of running, 2 days of #gym, and 1 day of #cycling. This will help me feel more in control of my training, will likely improve my weekday daytime high blood sugars during my sedentary work day, and then I won't miss a workout if my work day goes longer than anticipated.

I'm determined to start my cross country ski season in November much fitter than I ended it in April. Luckily, my off-season gives me enough time to course correct.

Thanks to @alanlamphotography for the during #race Thanks to @alanlamphotography for the during #race shots from Slay the Dragon!
Thanks to my company for getting the finish line photos!

The race results were only reported as overall finishers and overall for gender. I didn't like that the "did not start" racers were added to that total. I didn't finish 26/44, I finished 26/35.
BUT
That means I finished in the average of the back of the pack!! Which is WAY better than I thought I would do! And it's what I was hoping I would get myself up to. Though I didn't think about this one bit during this race. That was a thought from a previous race.

It also means I have to shave off a good 45 minutes if I want to finish in the top 10 females, for next year. Which is quite a big jump!
I think it's a more reasonable goal to aim for the middle. As aiming (or hoping) to land in the average of the back of pack got me exactly that. Which also shows that my mind might be the bigger limit than my performance or my #fitness.

Today was #RaceDay !! Did the @bush_babe_ 's 13K S Today was #RaceDay !! Did the @bush_babe_ 's 13K Slay the Dragon race at #SilverStar #mountain, and it was SO AWESOME!!

When I saw the course profile a few days ago, I was not looking forward to the elevation gain. However, it was very gradual and along twists and turns and little ups and downs along the way!!

This course had EVERYTHING.
We started on pavement, which was a little rough but it was all flat! Then, we got onto some gorgeous dirt single track, then SNOW, then more dirt, mud, gravel, dirt, rocks, more snow, and a rocky descent. I LOVED hitting technical terrain!!

The conditions were perfect, it was opening day for the downhill mountain biking park (we saw some bikers), not too hot or cold, well placed aid stations and course flagging. There were course sweepers, and free massage at the end of race (I did not partake). Cute little wooden medals, too!

Best of all, I felt GREAT! I didn't have any blood sugar problems, though I ate a little more sugar than I wanted to, my right leg was a little sore at the beginning but resolved itself once I was running along undulating terrain. I also tried to focus on picking up my foot more.

Oh, and a gent in front of me at the beginning of race had his Omnipod on his arm, and I got a little ahead of him, and said "hey we're in the same club!" as I lifted my shirt in the back to show him my pod. We had a little chat and then I continued on my way. He was stoked to find another #t1d in the #okanagan who was #athletic!

I can't wait to do this race again next year!!
