2018 is almost upon us, and it’s great to use the beginning of a new year to reflect on what worked in the year that is closing, and set some new wheels in motion for the next year beginning. One door closes, another door opens. January is usually the busiest time in any fitness facility.

This past Sunday was the last day of #MastersXC #t This past Sunday was the last day of #MastersXC #training. My regular leader had a co-leader, so I joined one of the other leaders who didn't have a tail gunner. 
I was actually a little relieved to #ski with this group because I knew they were going less far, and they were more beginner in ability. I was able to provide some awesome technique tips and give many people their AHA! moments. 

The BBQ after was also awesome. The leader I had been learning from all season told me I am ready to take on my own group of beginner #SkateSkiers next season! I was so excited! To add further joy, one of the program participants also told me I was ready to lead a group and would happily join my group next year!! Ahhhh!! 😍 [Heart eyes emoji]

For all of my heart that I lost in my own personal technique and fitness development, I gained it all back from learning to be a Masters' leader. Truly, #MySovereign is where my heart is. 

Also, working in the health and fitness industry has made me reluctant to ask for help, as I have often felt I should be able to train myself. However, I must admit that others may have different knowledge than myself, and if I'm not happy with my personal performance, I should change it! 
I'm happy to report that I have hired a personal trainer, something that I haven't done since 2008, when I first started my kinesiology degree. I trust this person to help me become more lean, so that I can ski the way I want to ski. 
As for the #winter, I have also decided to hire a personal #CrossCountrySki coach. While I have access to tons of resources as a Masters' leader and have learned a lot through being a leader, I need a personalized training plan to achieve the performance increases I am seeking.

Big feelings I have been having the past week. 

In the perfect world, one gets better everytime they do it. 
But if #training lacks specificity, gains start to diminish. 

Sometimes the best thing to do is either take a break. Or change the focus. 
I hope to keep #SkateSkiing next season, but focus more on movement, rather than working on fitness or technique.
It's been a busy couple of weeks, where I haven't It's been a busy couple of weeks, where I haven't had time to sit down and process all the #XCtraining happening. 

Conditions have ranged from soft and warm to sticky and cold.
I gave myself a #HillTraining #workout doing 3 repeats of the Aberdeen hill to Abermore connector at @sovereignlake .
I met some friends at @silverstarmtnresort when a bus got stuck along the road to Sovereign Lake.
The cold sticky day was my longest #ClassicXC ski day at #SovereignLake ever, and I had my butt handed to me as I was well behind my group and still hitting 183bpm #HeartRate ! 

I have been getting better at #Offset #Poling up hills, and getting more glide. 
Depending on my mood, I alternate between feeling like I'm getting better and #fitter, or feeling like I'm not any better than I was last season. 

I plan to do another longer #SkateSki day tomorrow to prepare for the @s2s_nordic race April 1st. But to keep those long distance days at an easy heart rate feels near impossible at my #fitness level. 

While I fully acknowledge and believe now that my #technique has a lot to do with that, I'm already trying to think ahead on how to build on this in the off-season. I loved #TrailRunning last year! While I don't really want to get into roller skiing because I don't enjoy #training for one sport all year 'round, I may need to dig back into my childhood and pick up a pair of rollerblades. Perhaps I can commute to work that way, as I was the fittest in my life when I was cycle commuting (I have two bikes but I'm taking a bike break). 

Getting my name tag as a #MastersCoach really lifted my spirits. I love this ski club so much and helping people fall in love with #CrossCountrySkiing. I have been learning so much from the leaders on how to be a leader! More people outside is always my goal. 

I also have to remind myself that I got into a sport with a long lead-in to get good at it deliberately, so that I wouldn't get bored and so I could always keep improving. This means I also have to be more patient with myself and just keep #skiing!
