How to complete a Spartan Race Trifecta – by accident

By stephanie 30 Sep, 2017

After completing my first accidental Spartan Race Super, next on my list was to deliberately race a Spartan Race Super. My race of choice: Spartan Super in Red Deer, Alberta. The first race in my life in which I had to board a plane (but not my last)! I chose this race because I had

2017 Race Schedule

By stephanie 6 Jan, 2017

I have most of my races already chosen and signed up for, because I wanted to keep with my 1 race per month frequency (which I started in August 2016 by accident). I wanted to select my races well in advance because a) I love being hyper-organized and b) I needed to know that races

I did a #GravelBike #training session a couple day I did a #GravelBike #training session a couple days ago, with Jay from @tagcycling
WOW! I had such a great time!! 😁

I was so happy that Jay knew a lot about #cyclocross, #RoadCycling, and #mtb, and had ridden most of the same #trails in North Van that I had ridden. Because it could help me describe what I was good and not so good at.

I feel like the more gravel #riding that I do, the better of a road #rider and #MountainBiker I will become.

We did so many trails that I did on my #mountain #bike last year. I was nervous that I would get thrown from my bike without wearing any padding. Especially because my gravel bike is WAY faster and lighter than my mountain bike. But Jay showed me how to pick my lines, so that I wasn't going over a lot of bumps, but around them more.

This pic was taken by Jay. My butt is lifting off my seat, because I'm getting ready to stand on my pedals to gnash up the hill in front of me (it goes up way farther than what's in this shot, and I didn't make it to the top without stopping. Jay was great at choosing terrain appropriate for my #skill level.
I have to say, doing these standing climbs after I've been pedalling at an easy pace is quite the challenge! It's like my legs have to go from 3 to 8 intensity in 3 seconds!

I can't wait to do it again next Wednesday! 😁

Yesterday's #GymWorkout was great! Despite forcin Yesterday's #GymWorkout was great!
Despite forcing us to book ahead of time though, I still had to wait 15 minutes for a #barbell or a space to do #deadlifts. 🙄
I've tried not doing deadlifts as my first #exercise, and it really throws off my flow, and makes me feel sloppy.
And as much as I hated waiting, it was worth it, because doing my workouts late morning/midday while I can, has been amazing for my #BloodSugars ! 🤩

I'm wearing one of my Tough Mudder shirts, and it reminded me that once I am discharged from the ViaCyte trial on April 27th, that I *could* go back to #ObstacleCourseRacing.
However, I'm not craving it, because I have really enjoyed the other activities I've sunk my teeth into over the past 2 years. And tbh, I miss the people and travelling for races more, than I did doing the races themselves. Of course, I had some amazing on course memories and beautiful interactions with people, but I won't be chasing it anytime soon.

Spartan Race was ruined for me when they became less inclusive as far as course design, to appeal to the pro racers and the NBC TV series. It became more of a suffer fest. Plus most of their courses were on equestrian ranches. Guess what's in that mud? Staphylococcus! 🤮 The nail was put in the coffin when the CEO made a post to his Twitter, denying the severity of COVID. Nope. Not giving that guy my money.

I would much rather do another Tough Mudder race, since those were way more fun, and involved a lot of cooperation with others on course. Plus, the pro categories would simply do the same obstacles multiple times, or have special secret obstacles just for them. No interference from the regular course. Sadly though, they got bought out by Spartan. 😭

So I'll just look forward to #training to do monkey bars and see if an #ocr series comes to BC that doesn't use equestrian ranches. 😛
If we are ever able to travel to the US again though, I am 200% down to do the #trail Ragnar relay race!!

This morning, I did a new thing: A #RoadCycling le This morning, I did a new thing:
A #RoadCycling lesson called "Join the Peloton" with @tagcycling .
It was SO AWESOME! 😁

People in my group were at my #fitness and #skills level, and we learned and practiced all kinds of fun stuff. Such as braking hard, feathering, more specific hand signals, verbal commands, riding in a group & drafting.

The instructor was great!!
What a warm, welcoming bunch! 😊

It was a drop-in #training session.
On Wednesday, I'll be doing their #gravel #bike lesson, then I also have an #mtb lesson coming up as well.

I love it when I find appropriate sports clubs for where I'm at. It's the opposite of feeling left behind. Included and enjoyed, rather than excluded and tolerated.

This whole week looks like sun, too! 🌞
